Here's how I think about therapy, in a nutshell...
It starts with you being truly heard and seen, sharing your stories, talking about the struggles you are facing, and the stuff that goes on in your head that you don't tell anyone. I listen, I'm present, I care, and you can start to tell that I'm really in your corner. That's essential.
And it allows you to drop into a deeper level of experience, below the surface of where we habitually operate in our day-to-day lives. Much of the healing work of therapy takes place here, and it's a big part of what sets therapy apart from the other supportive relationships we may have. This deeper work looks different for everyone, and is often different for the same person from session to session. For example:
We may focus on the body, noticing what's happening inside as you are talking with me. The body is honest and wise, and often leads us to sensations, emotions, or memories that are really important, but were previously outside of our conscious awareness.
Sometimes we explore whether a particular experience is familiar--maybe it's a pattern that has repeated in your life over and over. Often our biggest challenges in the present have roots in our childhood, and unraveling those wounds from the past can bring major healing in the present, especially when we can tap into our emotions and process and release them.
Often we incorporate the arts because they are an incredibly powerful pathway toward healing. The arts can get you beyond what you already know about a problem or situation and let your inner voice guide you toward new understanding. Engaging your creativity gets you in touch with your intuition and resilience in new ways.
I'm also a big believer in taking action, and I will lovingly nudge you toward taking steps outside of session to bring about the shifts you want to see in your life. The healing and growth that happens in the therapy session makes room for new ways of being in the world. From there, I'll support you to figure out what moves you want to make in your life to get where you want to be.
